What Is the Marine Corps ASVAB Test?

The ASVAB is used by all branches of the U.S. military to determine an applicant’s qualifications and potential Military Occupational Specialties (MOS).
The Marine Corps Recruitment Process
1. Contacting a Recruiter: Prospective Marines begin by contacting a local Marine Corps recruiter who provides information and guides applicants through the initial steps of the enlistment process.
2. Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, being between the ages of 17 and 28, having a high school diploma or GED, and meeting specific moral, physical, and medical standards.
3. Taking the ASVAB: The ASVAB measures aptitude in various areas and helps determine which MOS an applicant is best suited for.
4. MEPS Processing: After taking the ASVAB, applicants undergo a thorough medical examination at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) to ensure they are physically and mentally capable of handling Marine Corps training.
5. Enlistment and Shipping Out: Once a recruit passes the medical examination and chooses an MOS, they officially enlist in the Marine Corps and receive a ship date to attend boot camp.
Tests Marines Must Take to Join
1. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB): Measures a recruit’s aptitude in various areas, determining eligibility for specific MOSs.
2. Initial Strength Test (IST): Assesses a recruit’s baseline physical fitness level, including pull-ups or push-ups, crunches or planks, and a timed 1.5-mile run.
3. Physical Fitness Test (PFT): A rigorous physical fitness test administered during boot camp, including pull-ups or push-ups, crunches or planks, and a timed 3-mile run.
4. Combat Fitness Test (CFT): Evaluates a recruit’s functional fitness and ability to perform battlefield tasks, consisting of the Movement to Contact, the Ammunition Lift, and the Maneuver Under Fire.
5. Swim Qualification: Ensures recruits are comfortable and competent in the water, including a 25-meter swim, treading water, and a deep-water jump.
What to Expect in the Marine Corps ASVAB Test
The ASVAB is a timed test available in computer (CAT-ASVAB) or paper-and-pencil (P&P-ASVAB) formats. The CAT-ASVAB adapts the difficulty of questions based on the test-taker’s performance, while the P&P-ASVAB has a fixed number of questions. The test takes approximately three hours to complete and consists of ten subtests:
General Science (GS): Measures knowledge of physical and biological sciences.
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR): Assesses ability to solve arithmetic word problems.
Word Knowledge (WK): Measures vocabulary and ability to understand words in context.
Paragraph Comprehension (PC): Evaluates ability to understand written information.
