What Is the Irish Defence Forces Aptitude Test?
The Irish Defence Forces serve the Republic of Ireland, encompassing the Army, Air Corps, Naval Service, and Reserve Defence Forces. Their responsibilities include state defense, aiding civil power, multinational peacekeeping, humanitarian relief, maritime security, and fishery protection, alongside ceremonial duties.
To join any branch of the Irish Defence Forces, you must pass the Irish Defence Forces Aptitude Test, which evaluates numerical, verbal, and problem-solving skills. This test is administered early in the recruitment process to identify candidates’ strengths and suitability for roles in the armed forces.
How Is the Irish Defence Forces Test Structured?
The aptitude test is an online assessment taken from home in an unsupervised setting via an emailed link. Candidates who progress may need to retake the test in a supervised environment to validate their scores.
The test consists of five sections, known as sub-tests, and you have 30 minutes to answer as many questions as possible. The sub-tests cover:
Error Detection
Orientation
Number Fluency
Word Rules
Deductive Reasoning
Irish Defence Forces Error Detection Test
This section assesses your attention to detail and ability to spot inconsistencies. You’ll compare two boxes, each containing a mix of letters and numbers, and identify the differences between them. If the combinations match, the answer is 0.
Irish Defence Forces Orientation Test
This section evaluates your logical and spatial awareness. You’ll be given two rules governing a set of arrows and must visualize the arrows’ positions and shading according to these rules. After viewing the answer options, you cannot revisit the rules.
Irish Defence Forces Number Fluency Test
Similar to numerical reasoning tests, this section assesses your basic numeracy skills. You’ll see two calculations and must determine which has the greater value, relying on your memory to compare the two. Read our Strategy to Ace the Numeracy And Mathematical Tests
Irish Defence Forces Word Rules Test
This section tests your ability to remember and apply logical rules to word sets. You’ll be given a rule for three words and must determine if a new set of three words follows the rule. Your answer will be the number of words that match the rule.
Irish Defence Forces Deductive Reasoning Test
This section assesses your ability to reason with verbal information. You’ll use two short rules to answer a question, selecting the correct answer from a list of options. Once you view the answer choices, you cannot go back to the rules.
